​Herd On The Ridge Inc. is located in the Upper Hunter Valley, a serene, private, and beautiful part of the world. For decades, we have been rescuing and taking in “unwanted” horses, dogs, and cats as a privately funded venture. Over time, we realised it does not have to be this way. The responsibility of rescuing vulnerable animals should not rest solely on individuals. It is something a community can stand behind together.

Our mission is to provide safe, compassionate, long-term sanctuary for animals in need while building a connected and supportive community around them.

Our Vision

We are laying the foundations for a dedicated sanctuary property where animals can live safely, recover from trauma, and simply exist without fear. Our vision is to create a place where vulnerable animals are given time, understanding, and dignity, and where people can reconnect with compassion in a meaningful way.

With the right support, we have the capacity to help many more animals than we currently can. Every fence built, every shelter constructed, and every improvement made brings us closer to opening our gates fully.

Our Story

Founded by mother and daughter Shannon and Ayla, Herd On The Ridge Inc. is built on lifelong dedication and shared purpose.

Shannon is renowned for her work with horses. Her gentle, kind, and effective methods help even the most traumatised horses regain trust and understanding. She works hands-on every day and has devoted her life to these animals.

Ayla works behind the scenes in an administrative capacity and has experience supporting not-for-profits and rescues. This plays a vital role in keeping operations organised, compliant, and sustainable. She is currently undertaking further study that will allow her to professionally support people in the future, strengthening the connection between animal welfare and human wellbeing.

We are also supported by an incredible and dedicated committee whose guidance and commitment help ensure the organisation runs responsibly and transparently.

Why This Matters

There are countless animals who fall through the cracks. Some are too old, too traumatised, or too complex for traditional rehoming pathways. We believe they still deserve safety, patience, and care.

Accountability and Community

We are an incorporated association governed by a committee, committed to operating responsibly and ethically. Funds raised go directly toward establishing and maintaining our sanctuary property, including fencing, shelters, feed, veterinary care, and essential infrastructure.

We believe in building this together. This is not just about saving animals, this is about saving people and creating a community, creating something lasting, and impactful.
